World Bicycle Day Celebrated in Vancouver

News - Intro image

VANCOUVER - Did you know that World Bicycle Day was founded by a Polish professor? Dr. Leszek Sibilski, a Polish-born sociologist and cycling advocate, led the global campaign that resulted in the United Nations officially declaring June 3 as World Bicycle Day in 2018. His vision was to promote the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation that supports sustainable development and health worldwide.

This year, thanks to the efforts of the Canadian Polish Congress, the City of Vancouver has officially proclaimed June 3 as World Bicycle Day, joining cities around the globe in recognizing the importance of cycling in building greener, healthier communities. The proclamation is both a celebration of cycling and a proud acknowledgment of Polish contributions to international advocacy.

We thank the City of Vancouver for supporting this initiative and honouring Dr. Sibilski’s legacy.
