Celebrating Polish Heritage Month 2025 in British Columbia

News - Intro image

Polish Heritage Month 2025 was a time of pride, remembrance, and vibrant celebration across British Columbia. From official proclamations to heartfelt ceremonies and cultural showcases, the Polish Canadian community came together to honour its history, heritage, and ongoing contributions to Canadian life.

May 2 – Polonia Day Ceremony at the BC Legislature

The month began with a formal Polonia Day ceremony held at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria. Hosted by MLA Diana Gibson in partnership with the White Eagle Polish Association, the event gathered dignitaries, community leaders, and Polonia representatives to celebrate the resilience, contributions, and cultural richness of Polish Canadians in BC.

May 2 – Flag Day in Kelowna

That same day, the Polish community in Kelowna gathered in Stuart Park for a Flag Day celebration organized by the Kelowna Polish Cultural Society. With around 50 attendees waving red-and-white flags proudly, the event created a striking and emotional visual tribute to Polish identity and unity in the heart of the Okanagan.

May 4 – Constitution Day Ceremony at White Eagle Hall

On May 4, White Eagle Hall in Victoria hosted a powerful ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the Polish Constitution of May 3rd, 1791—the first modern constitution in Europe and the second in the world after the United States. The event featured a dramatic reenactment of the historic constitutional signing, as well as musical performances and poetry readings, offering an educational and inspiring experience for all attendees.

May 4 & 11 – Memorial Masses at St. Casimir’s Parish

Two important Masses were celebrated at St. Casimir’s Parish in Vancouver. On May 4, a Mass for the Homeland was offered for the well-being of Poland and its people. On May 11, a solemn Mass commemorated the anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. Members of the Polish Combatants Association (SPK) were in attendance to honour those who fought for freedom and dignity in one of World War II’s most significant battles.

May 25 – BC Polish Festival in Port Coquitlam

The grand finale of the month was the BC Polish Festival, held on May 25 in Port Coquitlam. This vibrant cultural event drew large crowds and featured a dynamic program of performances by dance groups—including the Polonez Dance Group—as well as singers, musicians, and even a live armored combat demonstration that captivated audiences of all ages.
A special moment during the festival was the recognition of community leaders by Consul General Aleksandra Kucy. Marzena Dziurka and Anna Słaszkiewicz were awarded the "Zasłużony dla Kultury Polskiej" (Meritorious for Polish Culture) decoration, and Jan Kutyła was presented with a congratulatory letter for his longstanding service to the community. Official Proclamations
This year, the Province of British Columbia officially proclaimed May as Polish Heritage Month. Additionally, the cities of Kelowna, Victoria, and Vancouver each proclaimed May 2 as Polonia Day, recognizing the significant cultural and historical contributions of Polish Canadians to the province and beyond.

As Polish Heritage Month 2025 concludes, we extend heartfelt thanks to all the organizers, performers, dignitaries, and community members who made this year’s celebrations so memorable. The strength and spirit of Polonia in British Columbia continues to grow and inspire. Dziękujemy!
