
VICTORIA - On August 22, 2025, the Canadian Polish Congress BC Chapter hosted a solemn Black Ribbon Day ceremony at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in Victoria. This annual event honors the victims of totalitarian regimes, particularly the Soviet and Nazi occupations in Eastern Europe.
The ceremony took place in the Hall of Honour, with the Honourable Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the BC Legislature, providing opening remarks. The keynote address was delivered by Paul Wojdak, author of Escape from Siberia, Escape from Memory, whose family's experiences reflect the tragic legacy of Soviet repression.
Notably, the event was graced by the presence of MLA Joan Phillip, the Consul General of Poland Mrs. Aleksandra Kucy and the Consul General of Japan, Mr. Takahashi Yoshiaki, underscoring the international significance of the commemoration. Brian Melnyk from the Ukraininan Canadian Congress delivered heartfelt remarks about Ukraine's ongoing struggles and the ongoing threat of totalitarianism.
Light refreshments were served afterward, allowing attendees to reflect and engage in discussions about the importance of preserving historical memory.
Black Ribbon Day serves as a reminder of the atrocities committed under totalitarian regimes and the enduring need to safeguard human rights and democratic principles.
